Rishi Sunak has indicated that he will face difficulties in achieving two of his five priorities: halving inflation by the end of the year and reducing NHS waiting lists in England. He placed the blame for these challenges on striking workers. In an interview before going on vacation, Sunak asked voters to trust him with the economy as he acknowledged that inflation was not decreasing as quickly as desired. However, when confronted by a constituent during a radio show about businesses closing in his constituency due to inflation, Sunak claimed that “business is good,” despite acknowledging that some businesses were struggling. Sunak argued that junior doctors and consultants were responsible for the increasing waiting lists in the NHS because they did not accept pay deals. However, a junior A&E doctor disagreed, stating that the blame for the rising waiting lists should not be placed on striking doctors but on the undervaluation of healthcare workers. Sunak emphasized that halving inflation was his most important priority and would have a transformative impact on people’s well-being. He acknowledged the difficulties in achieving this goal but stressed the need to stick to the plan and make responsible decisions.
