Oregon Health & Science University and Legacy Health Announce Merger
Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) and Legacy Health have signed a nonbinding letter of intent to merge and create a comprehensive, integrated health system. The merger aims to provide high-quality, essential healthcare services to patients throughout Oregon, the Pacific Northwest, and beyond. Both OHSU and Legacy Health boards of directors have unanimously approved the letter of intent.
OHSU, a public corporation established in Oregon law, has a mission of teaching, healing, and discovery. Legacy Health, a local nonprofit health system, is driven by its dedication to improving the health of its communities. The merger will leverage the complementary expertise of both organizations to create a high-impact healthcare system with a mission of public service.
The combined system will become the largest employer in the Portland metro area, with over 32,000 employees and 100-plus locations, including 10 hospitals. The focus will be on enhancing the region’s leadership in patient- and community-focused healthcare, education, research, and innovation.
Benefits of the Merger
The merger between OHSU and Legacy Health brings together their respective strengths and resources. OHSU brings experience in serving complex patient needs, statewide healthcare training and education programs, and leading-edge research. Legacy Health has deep roots in providing high-quality, community-based care through its comprehensive system of hospitals, clinics, and outpatient facilities.
The combined system will prioritize the acceleration of high-quality care, expansion of community-based and digital care offerings, and the training and education of future healthcare professionals. Additionally, creating a safe and valued work and learning environment for all members will be a key focus.
By joining forces, OHSU and Legacy aim to attract, engage, and support the region’s best healthcare workforce. The organizations will invest in tools, technologies, and education and development initiatives to foster the growth of team members and deliver exceptional care and service.
Leadership and Mission
Leadership from both OHSU and Legacy Health will play a role in the strategy development of the combined system. The mission of providing good health for people, patients, communities, and the world remains paramount.
Kathryn Correia, president and CEO of Legacy Health, expressed excitement about the merger, stating, “By combining with OHSU, we will expand our ability to deliver on our mission,” emphasizing access to high-quality essential healthcare and creating an exceptional work and learning environment. Similarly, Danny Jacobs, president of OHSU, highlighted the opportunity to join forces and deliver the best access and care to all who need it.
Commitment to Community Health
Both organizations recognize the importance of addressing critical community healthcare needs and disparities. As part of the agreement, Legacy Health will establish a new independent foundation using its net cash and investments (above outstanding debt) to promote physical and mental well-being and address health inequities, including social determinants of health and behavioral health.
Future Steps and Timeline
OHSU and Legacy Health are working towards reaching a definitive agreement in the coming months. The merger is expected to close in 2024, subject to regulatory review and customary closing conditions.
