Sharon Begley Science Reporting Fellow

Deborah Balthazar is the 2023-2024 Sharon Begley Science Reporting Fellow at STAT. Previously, she was a freelance science journalist with bylines in Science News, Science News Explores, and Scholastic Classroom Magazines. Before that, Deborah wrote for three years about the local government in her hometown and surrounding towns in New Jersey for TAPinto.net, a hyperlocal daily online newspaper. She has also worked as a substitute science teacher. Balthazar received a B.A. in biology with minors in English and chemistry from Caldwell University and received a master’s degree in science journalism from the Science, Health & Environmental Reporting Program (SHERP) at New York University. In her free time, she enjoys crocheting and reading webcomics.
