Young adults, Gen Z, rise in politics

The Tennessee House’s expulsion of two Black state Democratic lawmakers in their 20s sparked nationwide outrage. Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson were removed for supporting stricter gun controls following a school shooting in Nashville that left six dead. Both men were voted back into office last week. This incident highlights the growing political impact of Generation Z, which comprises 70 million young Americans aged 11-25. This cohort has become politically engaged on a range of issues such as gun control, reproductive health, education, and racial justice. John Della Volpe, director of polling for the Institute of Politics at Harvard Kennedy School, highlights their unique lived experiences with trauma and chaos, shaping their values and political priorities. The Gen Z electorate will soon dominate the US electorate alongside Millennials, making up 40% of the vote in 2024. Though these groups share similar political values, Gen Z has a greater sense of urgency and desperation in pursuing change. The Tennessee incident may serve to further mobilize Gen Z voters, increasing their political muscle and influence.
