New York legalized sports betting at commercial casinos in 2013, but it wasn’t until January 2022 that legal online sports betting went into action. This includes both mobile and retail betting. Additionally, New York’s first in-person sportsbook opened in July 2019.

How Do I Bet on Sports in New York?

New Yorkers who are over 21 can make online, mobile, and retail wagers, but all legal sports bets must be placed within state lines. Mobile sportsbooks use geolocation to track your phone’s internal GPS chip. Betting online requires a plugin to make legal bets. If making retail wagers, bettors can head to one of the casinos in New York.

Can I Bet on College Sports in New York?

It is not legal to place bets on any New York Division 1 collegiate teams, including individual player props during college basketball and football seasons. In addition, New York residents cannot bet on in-state collegiate events, such as college football bowl games, college basketball conference tournaments, and March Madness games. However, they can bet on college sports and teams that are located outside of the state, such as placing futures bets on conference championships, the Heisman Trophy, or over/under win totals.
