Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has launched his 2024 presidential campaign on social media platform Twitter, after experiencing multiple technical difficulties during a planned conversation on the site’s Spaces feature. DeSantis, who has expressed distrust of the media following criticism of his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, laid out his priorities as president, including tackling national crime rates, promoting energy independence and dealing with the rise in migrants at the US-Mexico border. He also criticised President Joe Biden over inflation rates and described him as “floundering” in the face of the country’s challenges. DeSantis has set an early fundraising target of $8-10m, much of which will reportedly be raised around the time of his announcement, during which the campaign will be “aggressive”.
