Russia Demands Release of Metropolitan Pavlo
Russia has demanded that Ukraine immediately frees Metropolitan Pavlo, a top Orthodox cleric who has been placed under house arrest. The arrest was made in connection with allegations that he had glorified Russia’s invasion and stoked religious divisions. Pavlo is the abbot of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery in central Kyiv. A court has ordered him to wear an electronic bracelet, has banned him from attending church services, and has ordered him to spend the next two months living in a village outside Kyiv.
Pavlo has denied the charges, and instead, believes the case against him is political in nature. Meanwhile, Russia’s Foreign Ministry has expressed concerns about the fate of Metropolitan Pavlo. According to the ministry, Pavlo is known to be under house arrest and in electronic shackles. They said that he is taking on the likeness of a martyr for the Orthodox faith and that Ukraine should free him immediately.
In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said: “We demand the immediate release of Metropolitan Pavlo and the provision of appropriate medical care for him.”
