Wendeng Lu Embroidery
Lu embroidery is one of the Eight Famous Embroideries of China with more than 2,000 years of history. Among them, Wendeng Lu embroidery is a unique school of its own and a Chinese intangible cultural heritage with tangible charm.
A Unique Style
Wendeng Lu embroidery is different from the four famous embroideries of Su, Yue, Shu, and Xiang. It is widely spread among the people and an essential part of the long-standing embroidery culture of the Chinese nation.
History of Wendeng Lu Embroidery
During the Ming and Qing dynasties, women used various techniques to embroider different patterns on cotton, linen, or silk fabrics. The lace weaving techniques were brought from overseas to Jiaodong region of Shandong in 1888.
At the end of the Qing Dynasty, a process called drawnwork was introduced to Wendeng. Drawnwork allowed craftsmen to extract a certain warp and weft yarn on the cloth to form a grid-shaped design as needed by the pattern.
Embroidery Art
Based on the lace weaving and drawnwork techniques, Lu embroidery folk artists have created various decorative patterns of embroidery art. From the middle and late 1990s to the beginning of the 21st century, Wendeng became a famous city of Chinese craft home textiles.
By combining the traditional shape of Lu embroidery with contemporary innovative technology, nearly 200 craft home textile enterprises have been established in Wendeng. The embroidery products are now sold domestically throughout the country and exported to more than 60 countries and regions such as the United States, Britain, France, Germany, and Japan.
Conclusion
Wendeng Lu embroidery is a unique Chinese intangible cultural heritage that showcases the charm of Chinese embroidery culture. As the embroidery technology evolves, the traditional embroidery culture is still alive and shared with the world.
