Small class sizes and personalized attention
ONEIDA — Holy Cross Academy offers a unique value in education that goes beyond the cost of tuition, according to Principal Therese Maciag. With small class sizes and a focus on individual attention, students at Holy Cross Academy receive a high-quality education in a Christian atmosphere.
Maciag stated, “We like to say we offer things that money just can’t buy here.”
A Brief Overview of Holy Cross Academy
Holy Cross Academy is an independent, co-educational Catholic school that serves students and their families in grades 7-12. Established in 1997 with the support of the bishop of the Syracuse Diocese and registered with the New York State Department of Education, the school has grown steadily over the years.
Currently, Holy Cross Academy has approximately 60 students enrolled in grades 7-12, and it celebrated its 21st commencement with five graduating seniors in June. The school anticipates a significant increase in enrollment for the following year. With a graduation rate of nearly 100%, Holy Cross Academy employs about 25 full-time and part-time staff members.
A Strong Emphasis on Faith and Community
The school’s week concludes with a Mass led by priests from various local churches. Governed by a board of trustees, Holy Cross Academy follows the academic schedule of the Oneida City School District, including snow days.
Holy Cross Academy’s origins can be traced back to a two-room schoolhouse in New London, which opened in the fall of 1997. Within a few years, the school outgrew its initial location and relocated to St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Oneida. However, even that space became insufficient as the student population continued to grow.
During this period, members of the Oneida Free Methodist Church were also seeking a larger space for their congregation. After touring the church, Holy Cross Academy staff was impressed by a central chapel within the building. Through collaborative efforts, Holy Cross Academy acquired the building, with the Methodists reducing the price to make it affordable.
Continued Growth and Generational Impact
Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, Holy Cross Academy is beginning to see a second generation of students, as children of alumni enroll in the school. Additionally, several teachers on staff are also Holy Cross Academy graduates.
An Education That Nurtures Mind, Body, and Soul
Rooted in the Catholic faith and centered on the teachings of Jesus, Holy Cross Academy is dedicated to educating the whole student. The school’s focus extends beyond academic development and incorporates the nurturing of the mind, body, and soul.
A Supportive and Close-Knit Community
Rachael Whitman, the Events and Communications Coordinator at Holy Cross Academy, emphasized the tight-knit community atmosphere at the school. Whitman appreciates the freedom she has in scheduling events and enjoys working with the student body, staff, and faculty.
Welcome to All Students
Holy Cross Academy welcomes all students to apply for admission. The admissions process involves reference and transcript checks, followed by an interview and approval by the Admissions Board. The student body at Holy Cross Academy comprises young individuals from 15 different school districts, including those from public, parochial, and home schools.
A Testament of Enduring Bonds
In a recent newsletter, valedictorian Christa Lohr and salutatorian Alexandria Kosuda praised their experiences at Holy Cross Academy. Lohr particularly cherished the sense of family within the school community, stating, “I know that no matter how much time has passed, I can go back and be welcomed with loving arms.” Similarly, Kosuda appreciated the close relationships formed in the school’s intimate setting, where students can bond with their peers and staff.
A Place for Family Involvement
At Holy Cross Academy, parent involvement is encouraged, and volunteers are always welcome. The school values getting to know both the families and the students. Many families at Holy Cross Academy were previously engaged in homeschooling and found the school to be a perfect fit, fostering a genuine family atmosphere.
Summer Activities and Future Plans
During the summer months, Holy Cross Academy offers a drama camp that is open to the public. The school also remains active, with staff members working on classroom preparations and lesson plans. Behind the scenes, there are tasks such as book orders, faculty and staff hirings, scheduling, parent communication, maintenance, and room planning. Additionally, Principal Maciag is currently working on securing a grant and arranging for the replacement of a beloved carpet within the school.
A Testimony from a Parent
Elizabeth Pratt, a parent of three Holy Cross Academy students, values the school’s commitment to Catholic education, academic excellence, and small class sizes. Pratt appreciates the open communication with staff members and the welcoming environment for her family. Her children actively participate in various extracurricular activities offered by the school, such as theater, sports, electives, and clubs.
A Warm and Welcoming Atmosphere
Pratt concludes, “It’s just a really nice family feeling here.” At Holy Cross Academy, students and their families feel embraced by the community, fostering a sense of belonging and support.
