United Airlines reports $194m loss, but sees international travel rebound.

United Airlines Reports $194 Million Loss in Q1 2023

United Airlines has reported a Q1 2023 loss of $194 million, in line with previous estimates as the airline’s post-Covid-19 recovery continues. However, the Chicago-based airline reported a 51% YoY revenue climb during the period, with revenue for the period ending 31 March at $11.4 billion. Rising fuel and personnel expenses were among the reasons highlighted for the 28% surge in costs during the period.

United Airlines Predicts Profit in Q2 2023

Despite these figures, United Airlines has predicted a Q2 2023 profit. It reports strong international demand and expects profits during the traditionally busy summer months, during which the airline will increase capacity by 18.5% YoY.

United Airlines to Expand Fleet

The airline ended Q1 2023 with 891 mainline aircraft and 446 regional aircraft in its fleet. It aims to acquire another 66 mainline jets by the end of 2023 and to cut 26 regional aircraft during that time.

United Airlines Expands Australia and New Zealand Schedule

United Airlines has also announced an expanded schedule to Australia and New Zealand. Direct flights will be available between San Francisco and Christchurch, and from Los Angeles to both Brisbane and Auckland from late 2023.

United Airlines to Discuss Q1 2023 Results in Analyst Earnings Call

Further details of United Airlines’ Q1 2023 results are set to be discussed in an analyst earnings call on 19 April. It remains unclear whether Boeing’s recent delivery pause on some 737 Max aircraft will affect United Airlines’ delivery schedule.
