Trump won’t deny using military to get Panama Canal.

President-elect Trump’s Controversial Comments on the Panama Canal

During a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday, President-elect Trump was asked if he would commit to not using the US Military to gain control of the Panama Canal, to which he said he couldn’t.

“I’m not going to commit to that. It might be that you have to do something,” Trump said at the press conference. “Look, the Panama Canal is vital to our country. It’s being operated by China, China. And we gave the Panama Canal to Panama. We didn’t give it to China.”

Concerns Raised by Journalist David Sanger

David Sanger, a New York Times reporter, asked Trump to elaborate on his remark, asking Trump if he can “assure the world” that “you are not going to use military or economic coercion.”

“No,” Trump replied.

Trump’s Criticism of President Carter and Views on the Panama Canal

Trump also criticized Carter over his part in returning the Panama Canal to Panama, saying it was a “big mistake” of the late president.

He did note that it was “inappropriate” to talk about Carter relinquishing the canal, which was not a sale but part of the Torrijos-Carter Treaties, and saw the US hand over control of the canal on Dec. 31, 1999.

However, Trump maintains that Carter sold it for “$1” and that it’s now being run by China.

Trump’s Focus on American Expansion

Trump has continued to focus on American expansion, not only keeping his eyes on the Panama Canal but also Greenland. He’s even proposed the idea of Canada merging with the US multiple times.

Plans for Territorial Holdings and Economic Security

When reporters asked if he would elaborate on how he plans to increase the US’s territorial holdings, Trump said he would not.

“I can’t assure you — you’re talking about Panama and Greenland. No, I can’t assure you on either of those two. But I can say this, we need them for economic security. The Panama Canal was built for our military,” Trump said.

Acquisition Plans and Views on Canada

Later in the press conference, Trump was asked if he had laid the groundwork for acquisition yet but said he was “not at that stage” because he wasn’t yet in office.

At another point in the press conference, he committed to not using military force to acquire Canada, which he continued to refer to as a potential 51st state.

Trump again laid out the positives of a Canada merger, saying the US protects the country and that it doesn’t “need anything they have.” He said he would use “economic force” to persuade the country.
