2020 was undoubtedly an eventful year for every single one of us and our beloved country. With a pandemic causing widespread chaos and the world locked down, the politics of the US were unable to function as usual. However, that doesn’t mean that Congress was quiet! That’s right! With 2020 drawing to a close, we look back at the Top 10 Jaw-Dropping Moments of Congress in 2020.
1. “Access Hollywood” Footage Leaked
Who could forget the much-talked-about Access Hollywood footage of Donald Trump and Billy Bush in the “locker room” that caused an uproar second only to that of the pandemic this year? Both Republicans and Democrats were up in arms as the incident rocked the political landscape.
2. Impeachment of Donald Trump
We saw history repeat itself as, for the third time in America’s history, a president was impeached. This controversial step by the Democrats led to a trial in the Senate. With intense conversations, infamous tweets, and political theatrics flourishing, the trial captivated audiences and rekindled the always-heapping fires of America’s PolComp.
3. Coronavirus Response and Relief Bill
The COVID-19 pandemic struck, overwhelming healthcare services around the globe. With a pandemic of that scale, it was only a matter of when the government pulled out the big guns. This was seen as both the President and Congress figured out how best to offer relief to those most impacted.
4. Protests Amid Pandemic
With the lockdowns at their peak, masses of Americans flooded to the streets to protest against police brutality and in respect for George Floyd and Breonna Taylor, among many others this year.
