University of the Pacific Plans New Student-Athlete and Sports Medicine Center
Administrators at the University of the Pacific are seeking funding sources for a new athletic facility. The proposed center will cover an area of 15,682 square feet and will be dedicated to student-athletes and sports medicine.
Location and Purpose
The center will be situated on the University’s Stockton campus, specifically on the current site of the South Campus Gym near the Alex G. Spanos Center. Its primary function will be to provide real-life clinical experiences for students enrolled in the Master of Science in Athletic Training Program.
The program holds accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, making it the only one in Northern California with this distinction.
Christopher Pond, assistant director of athletics for sports medicine and wellness, emphasized the importance of the center in preparing future healthcare professionals. He stated that the collaboration between the Athletics Department and the academic program creates a clinical environment that has produced numerous successful athletic trainers, therapists, educators, and physicians. Providing immediate and effective treatment to patients in a competitive setting ensures adherence to the highest standards of healthcare.
Features and Expectations
Once completed, the building will offer various amenities for student-athletes, including a nutrition center, study area, modern film and game-planning rooms, as well as event and student-gathering spaces. Additionally, the locker rooms for court sports teams will be upgraded to better accommodate athletes.
The estimated cost of constructing the student-athlete and sports medicine center is $10 million.
