Baseball Season and Minor League Parks
Spring marks the beginning of another baseball season, and for many, it’s time to head out to the diamond. Minor league baseball parks across the country, including North Carolina, become home to players hoping to make it big, as well as young employees hoping to begin a career in sports.
Breaking into the Business
Ryan McGee, now a reporter for ESPN, started his career in sports by doing everything possible to break into the business in 1994. He found a job with the Asheville Tourists, which turned out to be the perfect opportunity to experience the hectic, joyous, and romantic life of working in America’s pastime. McGee shares his story in his new book, “Welcome to the Circus of Baseball: A Story of the Perfect Summer at the Perfect Ballpark at the Perfect Time.”
The Perfect Summer
On this episode of Charlotte Talks, McGee and guest host Erik Spanberg discuss his summer with the Asheville Tourists, the special appeal of baseball, and how it prepared him for his life in sports. McGee is now a senior writer for ESPN, co-host of Marty & McGee on ESPN radio and the SEC network, and the author of “Welcome to the Circus of Baseball: A Story of the Perfect Summer at the Perfect Ballpark at the Perfect Time.”
