Science Week 2023: Exploring Innovation and Discovery.

2023 National Science Week: Celebrating STEM for 26 Years

2023 marks 26 years of National Science Week, the largest annual celebration of STEM in the country.

This week, National Science Week kicked off in Western Australia (WA) with an incredible launch event. The event featured speeches from esteemed individuals in the field, including:

  • Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, Minister for Science
  • Professor Peter Klinken AC, Chief Scientist of Western Australia
  • Kate Lewkowski, CEO and Co-founder of Neurotologix and 2022 Western Australia Innovator of the Year
  • Dr Shawn Price, Lead Engineer, ULUU

The Theme: Innovation: Powering Future Industries

The theme for 2023 National Science Week is Innovation: Powering Future Industries. This theme provides an opportunity to showcase the outstanding scientific and technological capability of Western Australia, as well as recognize the innovators from the region who are making significant contributions on the global stage.

Science and Technology as Priorities

Science and technology are highlighted as priorities in the Diversify WA economic development framework. These sectors, including health and medical life sciences, new energies, and space industries, rely heavily on STEM and innovation to build a technologically advanced and prosperous future. Additionally, they contribute to better health, social, and environmental outcomes for all Western Australians.

Aligning with STEM Skills Strategy

National Science Week aligns with the State’s STEM skills strategy, Future Jobs, Future Skills: Driving STEM skills in Western Australia. This alignment aims to develop a strong STEM culture within the state, where science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are supported and celebrated by the community alongside sports, the arts, and other endeavours.

A Month-Long Celebration

National Science Week will run from 12 to 20 August, with various events and online activities celebrating science happening across Western Australia throughout the month of August. One of the flagship events, The Anti-conference: Innovation, Inspiration, and Intelligence, offers participants the opportunity to choose their own science-based adventure. The event will take place on 11 and 12 August.
