Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) recently held its annual fashion show featuring 55 soon-to-be graduates showcasing their unique designs. The event was held in Atlanta and was widely anticipated, given the school’s reputation for creating innovative fashion design graduates. This year’s show had a different vibe from the commercialized runway presentations normally seen, which made it a breath of fresh air.
The students received mentorship from notable industry professionals through the school’s Style Lab mentorship program leading up to the show. The jury included LaQuan Smith, Vogue Runway director Nicole Phelps, photographer Tommy Ton and CFDA vice president Sara Kozlowski. The program allowed the students to learn, grow and develop their skills, which produced a lineup of astonishing designs.
The range of looks was impressive, with 175 outfits on display featuring a variety of silhouettes and aesthetics, from “Mad Max” to neoclassicist. Some students obscured models’ faces, while others explored utilitarian staples, and some went all out with trains and pleats.
The SCAD 2023 fashion show served as a platform for students to embrace creativity and expand their possibilities. Innovative designs, such as corsets from Garren Hayes and Smith Megan, futuristic android-wear from Rainey Lowery and mashed-up denim from Torrion Reed, were standouts.
Overall, SCAD’s fashion show was an exceptional display of talent and creativity. This generation of designers sees the need to challenge the norm and explore the possibilities. The event showcased the future of the fashion industry and proved that SCAD is continually producing top-tier fashion graduates.
