Satoshi Kuwata Wins 2023 LVMH Prize for Young Designers
Satoshi Kuwata, founder of the Setchu fashion brand, has been announced as the winner of the prestigious 2023 LVMH Prize for Young Designers, cementing his place in the fashion industry’s elite.

The LVMH prize, celebrating its 10th year, is renowned for propelling aspiring designers towards a successful career in fashion. Winners were unveiled on June 7.

This esteemed award event is hosted by LVMH, the world’s largest luxury goods conglomerate. Over 2,400 talented designers from 15 countries competed for the opportunity to be crowned this year’s LVMH Prize recipient.
Prize Recognizes Exceptional Talent
Kuwata, 39, was awarded a cash prize of 400,000 euros (62 million yen, $435,200) in recognition of his exceptional talent and contributions to the fashion industry.
A Journey from Kyoto to London and Milan
Kuwata’s journey in fashion began with a role as a sales clerk at a Beams clothing shop. He then embarked on a venture to London in 2004, where he worked at the renowned tailor Huntsman on the esteemed Savile Row and pursued studies at London’s esteemed Central Saint Martins college, affiliated with the University of the Arts.
During his career, Kuwata also gained valuable experience at Gareth Pugh and Givenchy.
Afterward, he relocated to Milan, Italy, where he established his own brand. His inaugural collection for the 2021 spring/summer season marked the beginning of his remarkable fashion journey.
A Fusion of Japanese and Western Influences
Kuwata’s genderless brand harmoniously combines elements of Japanese and Western style, incorporating designs inspired by the intricate art of origami.

Looking ahead, Kuwata expressed his aspirations, stating, “My dream is to make my brand remembered by history. I want to continue creating designs that transcend borders and blend cultures.”
