Skin tags, also known as acrochordons, are small benign tumors that form in areas where the skin forms creases or rubs together. They are more common in overweight individuals, older adults, and those with type 2 diabetes. Skin tags are made of collagen and blood vessels surrounded by skin, and they are usually flesh-colored or slightly darker. While they don’t typically cause any symptoms, they may bleed or become sore if they rub against clothing or jewelry. Removal of skin tags is generally for aesthetic or cosmetic reasons, and there are various methods for removal, such as skin tag removal bands, freezing kits, cutting or clipping, apple cider vinegar or tea tree oil, and cauterization. However, it is recommended to speak with a healthcare provider if individuals have skin tags and are worried about them, as removing them at home can be risky and may result in infection or scarring.
