Last week my students finished To Kill a Mockingbird, a novel in which a Black man is accused of assaulting a white woman during Jim Crow America.
My students also read a nonfiction article about Emmett Till. Till was accused of “assaulting” a white woman during the same era of American history.
I asked my students “Why are we reading about Emmett Till?”
Do you know the answer?
In all of my classes but one, the answer was the same. “It is almost Black History Month.”
My students have been so trained to believe Black people can only be discussed in February, they missed the obvious connection between the novel and the article.
Luckily, they figured out the correct answer fairly quickly. It was a reminder of the push to get rid of Black stories. Less than a week later, I heard the orange guy was canceling Black History Month
