BENBROOK (CBSNewsTexas.com) – U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Restricts Cyclists’ Access at Benbrook Lake
Starting Oct. 1, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be implementing restrictions for cyclists on a popular road at Benbrook Lake. This decision comes in response to an increase in unruly behavior reported by park rangers and a rise in usage near the campgrounds in South Holiday Park. The main concern cited by the Army Corps of Engineers is the cyclists’ safety.
Restricted Area and Violations
The restriction applies to the southern portion of Holiday Park, which covers a 2.5 mile stretch passing through the campgrounds. Current access to the camping area involves riding around a small opening near a fence. However, according to a spokesperson for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, many cyclists have been breaking the rules by not staying on the road and riding into camping areas. This includes areas like ‘Nice Hill,’ which was originally permitted for older cyclists under a previous agreement in 2019. Reports indicate that since May this year, there have been 388 reported incidents involving cyclists, and since 2019, there has been a 300% increase in riders coming through the camping area. As a result, in order to access South Holiday Park, individuals will soon need to reserve a camping spot.
A Cyclist’s Perspective
Cyclists who frequently ride in the area are disappointed and shocked by this decision. Many express concerns about safety, stating that if access to the park is restricted, more cyclists will resort to using busy roads like 377, potentially leading to accidents. They assert that a few bad actors should not ruin the experience for all cyclists. The cycling community has launched a change.org campaign to oppose the restriction.
Oct. 1 Deadline
Unless there are any changes, Oct. 1 is the scheduled date for the closure of the designated cycling area in the park. To support the online campaign against the restriction, click here.
