Shakespeare’s Timeless Relevance
Ben Johnson, a contemporary of William Shakespeare, famously stated, “He was not for an age, but for all time!” Even in our modern world, it is undeniable that Shakespeare’s oeuvre continues to have a profound impact. Despite the vast differences between Shakespeare’s era and our own, the legendary playwright’s work remains resonant.
Richard III: A Timely Play
Ariana Karp, the Artistic Director of the Incite Shakespeare Company, recognizes the almost painful sociopolitical relevance of Richard III, one of the plays in the War of the Roses tetralogy. Karp emphasizes that the play’s impact can vary depending on the audience, but it maintains an unbelievable relevance in the present moment.
An Ode to Machiavellian Politics
Richard III tells the story of Richard of Gloucester, a manipulative and conniving character who ruthlessly ascends the English throne. Ultimately, his rival Henry Tudor raises an army against him, leading to Richard’s demise in the Battle of Bosworth Field. Karp’s inspiration to produce Richard III stemmed from observing the House Speaker election that resulted in US Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., seizing power after a series of 15 ballots. However, the play’s relevance extends far beyond American politics, delving into the darker aspects of human nature that we often prefer to ignore.
Shedding Light on History and Humanity
Karp emphasizes the significance of history in understanding political struggles that have unfolded throughout millennia. Shakespeare’s plays, including Richard III, provide a valuable context for examining these ongoing struggles. Incite Shakespeare Company Santa Fe, formerly known as the International Shakespeare Center, has been diligently bringing seminars, classes, and professional performances to the community since 2015. Despite facing the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, they have persisted in their mission to engage audiences through innovative productions.
The Evolution of Incite Shakespeare Company Santa Fe
Following a period of introspection and reevaluation, the theater company underwent a rebranding process this year, adopting the name Incite Shakespeare Company Santa Fe. This change was driven by a desire to clarify their mission. While they remain committed to bringing renowned artists to Santa Fe, their essence is as a performance ensemble. By blending original practice techniques with contemporary acting methods, their productions provide a unique fusion of historical and modern approaches. Additionally, the incorporation of original compositions by Geoffery Pomeroy, performed alongside a contemporary set, promises a refreshing and dynamic experience for audiences.
A Stimulating Conversation Starter
Above all, Ariana Karp hopes that the audience will be intellectually, emotionally, and imaginatively provoked by the performance, leading to engaging discussions. The aim is to encourage individuals to connect with one another and explore their experiences after witnessing the play.
Universal Themes, Timeless Appeal
Although Richard III may not enjoy the same level of recognition as Shakespeare’s other works, its themes resonate with viewers, irrespective of their familiarity with Shakespeare or 15th-century history.
