This story is part of the QCBJ’s annual Newsmakers edition. This year-end wrap-up by the Quad Cities Regional Business Journal’s staff includes some of the biggest stories we brought you during 2024. Each story also includes an update on the subject. Excerpts from the original stories as well as the new updates appeared in print in our Monday, Dec. 23 edition.

The initial story was published in March of 2024.

Vynce Querin, manager at Temple’s Sporting Goods at 5171 Competition Drive, recently had this to say about his north Bettendorf business neighborhood: “This is the new Bettendorf. It’s growing. It’s getting better. It’s coming together piece by piece.”

In just the past few months, plans have been announced for more businesses, more buildings, and more growth for the area often called The Plex.

New Developments in The Plex Area

  • ORA Orthopedics will build a new $50 million, state-of-the-art outpatient surgery center next to the TBK Bank Sports Complex on Competition Drive, Bettendorf.
  • Bettendorf Family Dental opened at 6786 Friendship Path.
  • A new $18 million SpringHill Suites by Marriott is under construction at 5235 Competition Drive.
  • Work has begun on the new sports building – that will be 112,000 square feet and cost about $13 million – next to the Iron Tee.
  • The QCR Holdings/Quad City Bank & Trust corporate headquarters will begin construction next year.
  • There are plans for a new MercyOne/Genesis Health Systems medical campus on the 53 acres immediately south of the TBK sports complex.
  • The City of Bettendorf is set to build a pedestrian bridge in the area next year.

“The Plex area continues to grow and be a catalyst for business development. … The Plex area has drawn great intrigue from many businesses and industry,” said Jeff Reiter, Bettendorf’s assistant city administrator.

Mr. Reiter added growth at The Plex won’t be limited to projects under construction now or starting in 2025. He expects much more growth in the coming years.

“I would not be surprised if this time next year, we are talking about business growth and development north of Interstate 80 – all due to the creation of the TBK Bank Sports Complex,” he added.
