Youngsters urged to lead sustainability changes in the UAE
Young people in the UAE are being encouraged to take leadership roles in the country’s Year of Sustainability (YOS) initiative, building an eco-friendlier future by forming sustainable habits. The YOS team is working with UAE-based experts and engaging youth through social media platforms, as well as drawing inspiration from the country’s heritage of sustainability.
The initiative, announced earlier this year by President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, aims to inspire collective action towards a sustainable future for the UAE.
Responsibility and sustainability
The YOS Working Team has recently conducted a majlis titled Youth Clicks in Al Ain where sustainability and responsible consumption were discussed. The event was run in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) Youth Council, the National Experts Program, and Al Ain Youth Council.
According to Rauda Al Falasi from the Year of Sustainability Working Team, “Sustainability is as much about climate change as it is about individual practices, as our everyday habits collectively impact the environment.”
As part of its work towards a more sustainable future, the initiative is planning activations to promote responsible food consumption and reduce food waste. It will also focus on the benefits of plant-based diets, as well as encouraging people to switch to slow fashion and support more eco-friendly products.
Experts weigh in on sustainability perspective
The Youth Clicks event featured three experts from the Year of Sustainability’s Experts Network: Abdulla Al Remeithi, Ali Al Shimmari and Maitha Al Hameli. These speakers gave insights into sustainability from a social, financial and environmental perspective, with the aim of promoting responsible consumption.
Building sustainability habits in all walks of life
By engaging the youth through its initiatives, the Year of Sustainability aims to guide the current generation towards a more sustainable future for the UAE, and encourage them to leave behind a legacy of sustainability for future generations. The initiative is also releasing a guide for the public that will provide tips on how to live an eco-friendlier lifestyle.
Individual habits contribute to the larger impact of preserving the environment, and the public is encouraged to commit to building sustainable habits by engaging with the Year of Sustainability initiative as a whole and participating in upcoming activations.
