Picard’s Chin’toka Scrapyards has a Deep Star Trek History
The latest episode of Star Trek: Picard, titled “Stardust City Rag,” takes the audience to the Chin’toka system’s scrapyard, where Picard and his team plan to retrieve Doctor Bruce Maddox, a cyberneticist who can help them find Dr. Jurati’s former lover, the notorious Borg expert, Soji Asha.
The Deep Star Trek History of Chin’toka System
The Chin’toka system first appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, where it was the site of a bloody battle between the Federation Alliance forces and the Dominion forces. The Dominion forces had captured the planet Chin’toka, and the Federation Alliance had to launch a massive counter-attack to reclaim it.
The Chin’toka scrapyard also has a deep history in Star Trek lore. In Star Trek: The Next Generation’s episode “Unification,” which aired in 1991, a Romulan defector provided Picard with information about a secret Romulan military base located in the Chin’toka system.
The Significance of the Chin’toka Scrapyards in Picard
In Star Trek: Picard, the Chin’toka scrapyard is a lawless place, where scavengers strip abandoned ships and sell the parts. According to the episode, Picard himself knows the Chin’toka scrapyard from his days as a Starfleet captain.
The scrapyard is also significant because it’s where Picard and his team find Seven of Nine, a former Borg who appeared in the Star Trek: Voyager series. Seven is after the leader of the former Borg drone organization, the Fenris Rangers, and her quest brings her to the Chin’toka scrapyard.
The Future of Chin’toka Scrapyard
It remains to be seen if the Chin’toka scrapyard will play a significant role in future episodes of Star Trek: Picard. However, given its deep history in Star Trek lore, it wouldn’t be surprising to see it appear again in some capacity.
