Pee-wee Herman’s Paul Reubens passes away at 70.

Actor Paul Reubens, Famous for Pee-wee Herman Character, Dies at 70

Actor Paul Reubens, who gained fame in the 1980s as the children’s TV star Pee-wee Herman, has passed away after a long battle with cancer, his team announced on Monday. He was 70 years old.

According to a statement posted on his Facebook page, Reubens was remembered as an iconic American actor, comedian, writer, and producer. His beloved character Pee-wee Herman brought joy to generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy, and belief in the importance of kindness. The statement acknowledged Reubens’ courageous fight against cancer over the years, showcasing his trademark tenacity and wit. As a gifted and prolific talent, he will forever be remembered in the comedy world and in the hearts of his fans as a treasured friend and a man of extraordinary character and generosity.

The public announcement of Reubens’ death shocked many, as his cancer diagnosis had not been disclosed previously. Reubens had chosen to keep his medical condition private. In a personal statement, he apologized for not sharing the details of his battle with cancer sooner. Reubens expressed gratitude for the love and respect he received from his friends, fans, and supporters throughout his career.

Reubens shot to stardom for his creation of the sarcastic yet good-natured man-child character Pee-wee Herman. With his iconic red bowtie and sneering catch phrases like “I know you are, but what am I?,” Pee-wee Herman became a cultural phenomenon in the ’80s and early ’90s.

Reubens’ career breakthrough came in 1985 with the release of the movie “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” which was directed by Tim Burton. The film followed Pee-wee’s humorous and surreal journey to find his missing bicycle and, though initially a modest box office success, it later gained a cult following.

The success of “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” led to Reubens securing a Saturday morning CBS show called “Pee-wee’s Playhouse,” which ran from 1986 to 1991. The live-action show became popular among both children and adults.

Reubens faced obstacles in his rise to fame when he pleaded no contest to indecent exposure at an adult movie theater in Sarasota, Florida, in 1991. Later, in 2004, he pled guilty to a misdemeanor obscenity charge involving explicit photographs of minors. These incidents tarnished Reubens’ reputation but did not derail his career.

Despite setbacks, Reubens made a comeback on the big screen with cameos in Tim Burton’s 1992 film “Batman Returns” and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” the same year. He received critical acclaim for his role as a drug-dealing hairdresser in the movie “Blow” in 2001, alongside Penelope Cruz and Johnny Depp.

Throughout his career, Reubens appeared in various TV shows, including “30 Rock,” “The Blacklist,” and “Gotham.”

The Groundlings improv and sketch comedy theater, where Reubens first performed and created his iconic alter ego, expressed deep sadness over his passing. They recognized Reubens’ significant contributions to comedy and entertainment, stating that his impact on the world would be long-lasting.

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel mourned the loss, describing Reubens as a brilliant and original comedian who brought laughter to both children and parents. Late-night host Conan O’Brien remembered Reubens for his magic, generosity, artistry, and devout silliness.

Actress Natasha Lyonne, known for her roles in “Orange Is the New Black” and “Poker Face,” credited Reubens with launching her career. She expressed her love and gratitude for his friendship and mentorship throughout the years.

Paul Reubens leaves behind a legacy of laughter and creativity that will continue to inspire and entertain future generations.
