South Dakota Governor Challenges Board of Regents to Improve Higher Education
Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota has issued a letter to the Board of Regents regarding higher education in the state. In the letter, she challenged the regents to take actions that she believes will better prepare students for the future.
Educational Challenges
Noem’s challenges for education included raising the state’s graduation rate to 65% by 2028, partnering with businesses and apprenticeship programs that offer low credit rates, and requiring American Government and History to be part of the general curriculum.
Social Challenges
In addition to educational challenges, Noem’s letter called for social changes on college campuses. She suggested removing references to preferred pronouns, prohibiting drag shows on campus, and eliminating policies that prohibit free speech by students.
Whistleblower Hotline
Governor Noem also announced the creation of a whistleblower hotline for students, parents, taxpayers, and faculty to voice concerns about higher education institutions.
Noem believes that South Dakota has the opportunity to set an example for the rest of the nation with its strong, conservative higher education system.
