  • Firm to Develop Applications for Broadcast of Over 1,300 Games Annually

The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced a multi-year partnership with Presidio, an IT services firm, to revolutionize the league’s back-end data and technological infrastructure.

Presidio will serve as the official technology innovation partner for the North American ice hockey league and will also design and create applications to facilitate the broadcast of more than 1,300 games each year.

As part of their collaboration, the NHL and Presidio have introduced an application, which will be employed by all 32 teams during this year’s NHL Draft.

Modernizing Data Infrastructure

The application utilizes hybrid cloud technology, incorporating on-premise infrastructure (such as servers) with the public cloud to provide secure access to multiple information streams for team employees. This app is employed by each team for making their draft selections, automatically transmitting the data to the NHL Central Registry and NHL Central Scouting services.

Commitment to Innovation

“We have made significant investments to create a state-of-the-art technology infrastructure, and we are dedicated to innovation in every aspect of the game and business,” stated Peter DelGiacco, NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. DelGiacco further added, “As a leading global digital services and solutions provider, Presidio will empower us to further modernize our infrastructure and build a foundation of applications for continuous innovation. We eagerly anticipate utilizing the new NHL Draft Application at the 2023 NHL Draft.”

Presidio’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Bob Cagnazzi, expressed excitement about expanding the company’s longstanding relationship with the NHL as an official technology innovation partner.

Industry Insights

Many rights holders in the sports industry form partnerships with major technology firms to benefit from discounted or complimentary services and expertise. However, most businesses, regardless of their industry, do not directly engage with behemoths like Microsoft, Amazon, or Oracle.

It is impractical for sports organizations like the NHL to possess the internal resources required to work directly with such companies. Therefore, they collaborate with resellers or consultancy firms that amalgamate top-tier products from multiple vendors and develop custom software based on their specific needs.

These IT service providers handle a range of tasks, including cloud migration, application development, hardware lifecycle management, and cybersecurity. Their expertise is indispensable for organizations like the NHL.

The partnership with Presidio will enable the NHL to advance its digital transformation and improve the efficiency of significant events like the draft.
