Supply Chain Issues Cause Delay in Opening Date
The opening date for The Kitchen Grill and Games, a restaurant and athletic entertainment venue at Discovery Park in southeast Columbia, has been delayed due to ongoing supply chain issues. Originally scheduled to open in Spring 2022, the opening has been pushed back several times. According to Jack Cardetti, The Kitchen spokesperson, the new target for opening is this summer, but it may be further delayed.
Phased Opening Approach
The developers have decided to take a phased opening approach. The indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, along with the bar and a limited food selection, are expected to be ready in the fall, around September or October. The entire restaurant will open in the winter.
Rising Popularity of Pickleball
The popularity of pickleball is on the rise, which has exceeded expectations for The Kitchen. Pickleball player numbers in the west-central region, including Missouri, grew nearly 30% in 2022, according to pickleball resource Pickleheads. The Columbia-based Show-Me Pickleball Club recently toured the site.
Pickleball Statistics
In 2022, there were 8.9 million pickleball players aged six and older, representing an 85% increase from 2021, as reported by Pickleheads. This underscores the growing demand and interest in pickleball.
Innovative Concept
The Kitchen is building on the live/work/play concept of Discovery Park. It aims to provide customers with more than just a restaurant or bar experience, combining great food, good service, and a social and recreational atmosphere. The concept is similar to venues like Top Golf and the upcoming TopTracer Driving Range at Midway Golf and Games, which will also house the 44 Stone Tavern.
What to Expect at The Kitchen
Once the restaurant opens in the winter, guests can expect American bar and grill-type fare. The overall atmosphere of The Kitchen will be similar to tailgating, providing a unique and enjoyable experience for visitors.
Phases of Development and Added Features
The delayed opening gave developers more time to enhance the facility. The size of the indoor and outdoor pickleball courts was increased, and a large common area with yard games and an outdoor screen was added. The yard games space may even be converted into an ice-skating rink during the winter.
