MDOT Suspends Nearly Two Dozen Road Projects Ahead of Memorial Day Travel
As Memorial Day weekend approaches, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has announced that nearly 24 road projects will stop construction to lessen traffic congestion.
“We lift as many restrictions as we possibly can, of course we can’t when its staged construction,” explained John Richard, a communications specialist at MDOT. “But stuff like resurfacing or a bridge rehab project or just maintenance, we can lift those lane closures from 3 p.m. Friday through Tuesday morning.”
However, two specific projects on Byron Road in Zeeland and I-196 between Zeeland and Hudonville will continue as planned in anticipation of a November completion date.
Richard confirmed that other areas of construction will be free from road closures such as ramps or lanes along I-96 between M-11 and Cascade Road. This suspension is reliant on progress and weather conditions.
AAA of Michigan forecasts 1.2 million Michiganders travelling at least 50 miles for holiday weekend festivities. As a result, construction suspensions will remain in place for five days in order to manage traffic increase in the area.
