Blinken Appoints Matthew Miller as State Department Spokesperson
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken recently announced that Matthew Miller, a former National Security Council and Justice Department official, has been appointed as the department’s new spokesperson. According to Blinken, Miller had previously led the “whole of government communications and outreach” efforts following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2023 before joining the State Department as spokesperson.
Matt Miller’s Experience
Miller’s previous role as Director of the Office of Public Affairs and spokesperson to Attorney General Eric Holder at the Department of Justice has provided him with extensive experience in “navigating and communicating on complex, global challenges like those we face today,” said Blinken. Given his background in government communications and his experience in dealing with complex issues, Miller is expected to be a valuable asset to the State Department.
Previous Spokesperson Ned Price
Ned Price, Miller’s predecessor, recently stepped down from his role as spokesperson to take up a new position within the State Department reporting to Blinken. Price held the position for about a year and was well-regarded by his colleagues and the press for his professionalism and responsiveness. His efforts in advocating for the department and communicating with the public and the press were also widely appreciated.
