Newport News, Va. – A tragic accident occurred on Thursday night on Interstate 64, resulting in the death of Henry Lloyd Appleby, a resident of Salisbury, Maryland. Police are currently investigating the incident, which took place just after Fort Eustis Boulevard in Newport News.
According to authorities, Appleby was driving west on I-64 in his 2012 Honda Pilot, towing a trailer. He attempted to pull over to the side of the road but was only able to partially maneuver the vehicle out of the left travel lane before it came to a stop. Appleby then exited his car and walked around the rear passenger side, which protruded into the road.
Meanwhile, a Chesterfield man was driving a 2023 Hyundai Elantra down the interstate. Tragically, he crashed into Appleby’s trailer and the victim himself, as per police reports. The impact of the collision caused the Hyundai to flip multiple times before eventually coming to a stop in one of the travel lanes.
Emergency services were alerted, and Appleby was quickly transported to Riverside Regional Hospital. However, despite the best efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the Hyundai and his passenger were also rushed to the hospital to receive treatment for serious injuries, although they were reported as non-life-threatening.
