Chicago’s Small Businesses Adapting to the Pandemic

Chicago’s small businesses faced numerous challenges during the pandemic, with many forced to permanently close. However, Torres Omar Jewelers in Logan Square managed to adapt and find new opportunities.

Emphasizing the Online Business

Torres Omar Jewelers, known for its celebrity clientele, focused on enhancing its e-commerce site during the pandemic. The company launched a new line of jewelry, featuring Italian Miami Cuban chains, pendants, bracelets, and rings, available both in-store and on its website. The prices range from $100 to $1000.

A Trusted Name in Chicago

Torres Omar Jewelers is highly respected and trusted in the Chicago jewelry industry. The family-owned business celebrated its 43rd anniversary, and its ability to adapt to the changing times played a vital role in its success during the pandemic.

Taking E-Commerce Seriously

The Marketing Director, Joey Torres, shared that going through the COVID-19 pandemic was enlightening. They took the opportunity to prioritize and revamp their e-commerce business, which helped generate revenue. The family worked together to brainstorm and find innovative ways to overcome challenges.

A Legacy Built on Family

In 1980, Jose and Maria Torres established Torres Jewelers in Lakeview after immigrating from Guanajuato, Mexico. In 1994, they opened a second store in Logan Square, merging the two names to create Torres Omar Jewelers. Their son, Jose Torres Jr., now runs the business.

Passing on the Business

Jose Torres Jr.’s wife, Norma, joined the family business in 1989. She decided to work behind the scenes to balance work and motherhood, influenced by their children’s need for parental support. Over time, their children, Joey, Cynthia, and Crystal, became interested in the business and brought unique contributions.

Engaging with the Community

Torres Omar Jewelers actively supports the community by sponsoring local events, including little league baseball teams, and awarding scholarships to undocumented students pursuing higher education. The store attracts a diverse customer base, from couples searching for engagement rings to local musicians and artists.

An Anniversary Celebration

The store celebrated its anniversary in June by hosting an intimate event at Floreria La Orquidea in Little Village. They unveiled their new line and spring/summer collection to the public. Choosing Little Village as the venue aimed to highlight the positive side of the neighborhood.

A Legacy of Love and Community

When asked about the legacy of Torres Omar Jewelers, Jose Torres Jr. emphasized the importance of family, love, and helping others. The business strives to continue being an integral part of the community.
