The 35th annual Regional Science Fair in Kern County saw an impressive turnout of around 460 4th through 12th grade students, who presented over 420 projects at the Mechanics Bank Convention Center on March 14. For many students, this event marked the culmination of months of hard work, having competed at their school and district levels for the opportunity to participate in the county-level fair. Students who ranked first in middle school and first and second place in high school may be selected to compete in the 73rd annual California Science Fair, due to be held virtually on April 11. Moreover, two high school projects showcased at the fair will represent Kern County in the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair set to occur from May 13-19 in Dallas, Texas, and will face-off against 1,800 students worldwide for nearly $5 million in awards and scholarships. Harjaisal Brar and Aarohi Patel from Stockdale High School will represent Kern County at the international fair. Kern County local winners also shone with four students placing in this year’s event: Avery O’Neil from Saint Ann School won third place in Physics II; Corinne Wadley from Saint Ann School placed second in the Materials Science category; Koen Olson from James Monroe Middle School won second place in the Electronics and Magnets category, and Quan Laskey from Saint Ann School placed second in Materials Science I. Detailed results from the fair are listed by grade level and category.
