CBS News Anchor Michelle Miller Shares Her Journey in Memoir
The personal story of CBS News journalist Michelle Miller is one of true strength and perseverance, as she details in her recently-published memoir, “Belonging: A Daughter’s Search for Identity through Loss and Love.” Miller was born to a Black father and a light-skinned Latina mother who abandoned her at birth in order to maintain the assumption of whiteness. Miller was raised by her father, grandmother, and community of loved ones, though she has since had sporadic contact with her mother.
In addition to exploring her personal growth and journey towards “wholeness,” Miller addresses several critical issues facing American society, including the use of Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a political tool and former President Trump’s alleged efforts to intensify racial conflict. Miller also discusses the challenges she faced in maintaining journalistic neutrality amid the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on communities of color.
While Miller argues against pure objectivity in news reporting, she does stress the importance of teaching history as fact and not perpetuating tall tales or myths about American history. Her memoir grapples with the pain of recognizing the racial dynamics behind her mother’s abandonment and her ongoing hope for reconciliation, while ultimately celebrating a life filled with memories and joy.
“Belonging: A Daughter’s Search for Identity Through Loss and Love” is available now from Harper Collins.
