Program Highlights

The program is distinguished by its extensive rigorous methods training. There is a sequence of four required methods courses: Methods in Architectural History, Methods in Architectural Theory, Methods in Architectural Criticism, and Methods in Architectural Education.

The program also emphasizes critical analysis of contemporary architectural ideologies and discourses. Students are guided to explore topics and questions close to the present in time that engage with contemporary architecture design culture.

Research Focus

Research projects can include topics such as the role of the image in architecture, philosophies of perception, discourses of race and gender, theories of architectural representation, and much more.

Thesis and Electives

In addition to the methods courses, students take six electives inside or outside the School of Architecture, complete a sequence of three thesis preparation courses, and then work on their thesis.

Future Opportunities

Some students may have the option to pursue a PhD in architecture at Virginia Tech. Graduates who intend to apply for PhD programs elsewhere will have a competitive edge. Students can also apply directly to the PhD program in History, Theory and Criticism.

Faculty Support

The program is supported by expert historians, theorists, critics, and designers at Virginia Tech School of Architecture who offer elective courses and thesis advising.

Information Session

For students interested in the program, there is an information session on January 15, at 10–11 am Eastern Time. For more information, contact Professor Joseph Bedford at jtb@vt.edu.
