Prime Minister Holness Announces Plan for Permanent Venue in Western Jamaica
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has revealed that the Government is giving serious consideration to establishing a permanent venue for festivals and concerts in western Jamaica. This initiative was one of the aspirations of the late Montego Bay businessman Robert ‘Ducksie’ Russell.
In a tribute to Russell, Prime Minister Holness expressed regret that the venue was not realized during Russell’s lifetime. However, he assured that the Government recognizes the importance and benefits of such a venue, crediting Russell for his influence and advocacy towards this cause.
Government Pays Tribute to Robert ‘Ducksie’ Russell
Prime Minister Holness paid tribute to Russell on behalf of the Government and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP), acknowledging Russell’s significant contributions to building the brand Jamaica, particularly in the entertainment and tourism sectors.
Other politicians present at the thanksgiving service at the Montego Bay Convention Centre also honored Russell, highlighting his passion for various activities such as racehorse enthusiast, bird shooting, cooking, and his involvement in entertainment and politics.
Tributes from Various Ministers and Former Prime Ministers
Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett, Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs Marlene Malahoo Forte, and Transport Minister Daryl Vaz all delivered touching tributes to Russell. Former prime ministers Bruce Golding and PJ Patterson also shared their reflections, with Patterson’s tribute read by Senator Janice Allen.
Russell’s children, as well as Joe Bogdanovich of Downsound Entertainment, also paid homage. Musical performances were given by entertainers Christopher Martin and Gramps Morgan, celebrating Russell’s legacy.
Legacy of Robert ‘Ducksie’ Russell
Robert ‘Ducksie’ Russell, associated with the popular Pier 1 Restaurant in Montego Bay and a co-founder of Reggae Sumfest, leaves behind a legacy marked by his dedication to Jamaican culture and entertainment. He is survived by his wife Beverly, described by many as the pillar of the family, along with his five children and grandchildren.
The thanksgiving service was attended by a diverse gathering of mourners from various backgrounds, reflecting the widespread impact of Russell’s life and work.
