Previously, we have explored the concept of ‘viruddha aahar,’ which refers to incompatible food combinations according to Ayurveda. Certain combinations, such as fish and milk or equal quantities of ghee and honey, can negatively affect our health. Recently, a high-protein breakfast recipe using honey and yoghurt caught our attention on Instagram, and we wondered if this combination is actually beneficial for our health. In our search for answers, we consulted nutrition experts. Before we discuss their insights, here is the recipe for the instant pudding:
– 300gm yoghurt or curd
– 1.5 cup pomegranate
– 4tbsp soaked chia seeds
– 1 tbsp honey (optional)
– 1.5 scoop unflavoured protein powder
– 10 soaked and peeled almonds
– 10 soaked black raisins
To prepare the pudding, mix all ingredients well in a bowl. According to nutritionist Arjita Singh, curd and yoghurt are both great sources of protein, with the latter having more protein but the former having more probiotic benefits. Soaked raisins are beneficial for digestion and immune health, while soaked almonds are rich in dietary fibre, vitamin E, Omega-3 fatty acids, and protein. Pomegranates are packed with antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties, vitamins, and minerals, making them excellent for heart, brain, and digestive health. Chia seeds are a rich source of omega-3 fats, fibre, and antioxidants, keeping you full for a longer period.
Dr Rohini Patil, an MBBS and nutritionist, explains that hung curd or yoghurt is a dairy product fermented with beneficial bacteria. It is full of nutrients such as calcium, vitamins, protein, phosphorus, B12, and probiotics that supports gut health, digestion, and bowel movement. Honey, on the other hand, is a good source of antioxidants, enzymes, iron, zinc, potassium, and calcium. Flavonoids and phenolic acids, which have been linked to decreased inflammation and improved cardiovascular health, are also found in honey.
So, is the combination of honey and curd good for gut health? According to Dr Patil, this combination provides a balance of macronutrients and beneficial compounds like protein, calcium, probiotics, and flavonoids. As a result, it could promote healthy digestion and alleviate digestive issues. Preeti Gupta, a dietician, agrees that the mix of curd and honey is beneficial for digestive health and can aid in weight loss, as long as they are consumed in moderation.
To add flavour to meals, Gupta shared a recipe for a honey curd dip. To create the dip, mix one cup of plain yoghurt or curd, two tablespoons of honey, one tablespoon of olive oil, half a teaspoon each of cumin and coriander powder, salt, and black pepper. Whisk the ingredients well until smooth and creamy, then garnish with chopped fresh parsley. This dip can be served with vegetables, pita bread, or chips.
In conclusion, the combination of honey and curd or yoghurt can be a healthy snack or meal option that promotes gut health, provides essential nutrients, and tastes delicious. However, it’s important to consume in moderation and not exceed recommended daily servings.
