From Indie Films to Box Office Hits – The Best Pictures to Win an Oscar

Going from Indie Films to Winning Oscars – Our Favourite Picks!

Cinematic finery en-route to Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

As filmmakers and audiences alike know, the Oscars represent the academy’s verdict on the best films of the year. The chosen films, in most cases, define a vision for the moment, reflecting culture and capturing everyone’s attention. At times, the films are produced with stealth ease, capturing a niche audience. Other times, they barge in with all the usual Hollywood narrative tricks, and perhaps flirtations with controversial subjects. In this article, we look back and share a few of our favourite pictures that won the Academy’s top spot.

Indie Darling: Moonlight (2016)

Indie producers at first might revel in this year’s Best Picture surprise win that oddly ended in chaos, but Moonlight stands as a beacon of why we need to celebrate independent cinema more often. Based on Tarell McCraney’s play – “In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue,” Barry Jenkins’ depiction of a young man’s coming of age in Miami showed why art is a wound that only heals with skill. The direction, performances, cinematography, and music lent something extraordinary to an already personal-feeling story.

Dreaming Big: Titanic (1997)

It wasn’t just a moment for director James Cameron, but Paramount Pictures teamed with trilithic institutions Cannes and Sundance that brought “Titanic” to us. At a time when, we never thought the ship would sink again in our minds, Titanic made the headlines quite very well. Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) ruled the cities, making it the most spectacular romance movie of all time. With everything from a historical backdrop to specks of laughter and teary drops throughout, everyone, and curious eyes especially, couldn’t have been fed better.

An Immersive Experience – The Lord of The Rings: The Return of the King (2003)

Usually, critics are such harsh guardians of a director’s vision and flaws, but not for “The Return of the King.” Shot in 274 locations, Peter Jackson’s free-range filmography literally brought Middle-Earth Paradise to life. Retro-script on Hans Zimmer’s sound-score, all is no words as we follow the scenic adventures of hobbits Frodo (Elijah Wood) and Sam (Sean Astin), who with brave souls manage to save their people and their very own futures. Today, like good memoirs and legends, The Lord of The Rings remains as colourful as it always was, and it homes many a person’s happy thoughts.

In Scrannies and Outlook: Spotlight (2015)

Tom McCarthy brought to life the psychological and thoughtful sensational motion picture “Spotlight” in cooperation with close-knit production teams and a group of highly- skilled performers. Deterring priests of their evil intentions might be Hollywood producing witch-hunts in unrealistic places (especially with notorious VIP’s..), but Silver Cap must be reading from the voters it won. Besides starring Mark Ruffalo, Rachel McAdams and Michael Keaton, “Spotlight” was extraordinary simply because McCarthy conjured love and clean responsibilities constantly. Totters of optimism v joy; clear conscience becomes the greatest police. Spotlights deserve to be shone.

In Conclusion…

We certainly hope you enjoy reliving the moments we have just shared with some of our favourites. The Oscars overwhelmingly stand as the standard-bearers for authentic and mindful films every year. Nonetheless, sometimes the surprise nominee becomes a permanent heist or win for directors and casts unmatched. What films are you hoping to see towards claiming the daisy-laced Best Picture Award and kicking off jazz feet since earlier this year?
