Darke County Offers Free Narcan for Certain Opioid Users
The Darke County General Health District in Ohio is offering a free distribution of Narcan for certain opioid users, according to a Facebook post from the department. Narcan, also known as naloxone, is a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdoses.
To qualify for the free Narcan, opioid users must meet certain guidelines, which include a history of nonmedical opioid use, previous opioid intoxication, initiation or cessation of methadone or buprenorphine, or high opioid prescription. Users who meet the guidelines must also be receiving any opioid prescription and have at least one of several qualifying medical conditions or circumstances.
A voluntary request for Narcan can be made by family members, friends, peace officers, or other individuals in a position to assist someone who may be at risk of experiencing an opioid-related overdose.
