The government programs tied to COVID-19 are either ending or winding down now that the pandemic state of emergency is over. However, small businesses in Los Angeles can still apply for free money. The city is offering up to $15,000 to qualified small businesses in the city that missed rent payments during the pandemic. The applications for those funds are due by the end of the day Wednesday. The county Department of Economic Opportunity is also offering Economic Opportunity Grants that small businesses and nonprofits affected by the pandemic can use for expenses related to operational and pandemic-related costs. Applications for those funds must be submitted by May 31. Small businesses must meet certain eligibility rules such as being a for-profit business that has a current L.A. business tax registration certificate with a valid lease for commercial property. Other criteria include a demonstrated negative impact due to the pandemic and a revenue of $5 million or less. The grants will be awarded through a lottery, with recipients notified in early July.
