The approval of several amendments and a new rule at a recent Florida Board of Education meeting has raised concerns about how further restrictions in and out of the classroom could negatively impact LGBTQ students in the upcoming school year. The amendments and rule provide guidelines on various issues such as the use of bathrooms, classroom instruction, admission of minors to adult performances, and treatment of LGBTQ students who wish to use a different name or bathroom that does not align with their sex assigned at birth. Some argue that these restrictions are necessary to maintain truth and sanity, while others worry about the safety and well-being of LGBTQ students and teachers. Additional guidelines also address the use of preferred names, pronouns, and rules for educators. A new rule on extracurricular activities and events prohibits districts from taking students to or hosting “adult live performances.” Although the rule does not specifically mention drag performances, concerns have been raised about its potential impact on the LGBTQ community. Both supporters and opponents of the rule expressed their views during the meeting.
