Michael Zheng earns All-American honors in debut season
First-year Michael Zheng added to his already impressive list of accomplishments, becoming the first athlete in program history to be named an All-American during his debut season with the Columbia men’s tennis team. By securing his spot in the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championships, Zheng earned ITA All-American honors.
“We are extremely proud of Michael,” Bidyut K. Goswami Head Coach of Men’s Tennis Howard Endelman said. “To be an All-American as a first-year Columbia student is a wonderful accomplishment.”
Zheng’s achievements this season
Zheng also earned accolades such as Ivy League Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and First Team All-Ivy in singles and doubles, becoming the first player in Ivy League history to win all four awards in one season.
Zheng advances to round of 16 at NCAA Singles Championships
Zheng defeated Michigan’s Gavin Young in the round of 32 to advance to the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championships. He will face either Ondrej Styler (Michigan) or Daniel De Jonge (Pepperdine) with a chance to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals.
NCAA Singles Tournament format
The NCAA Singles Championship features 64 of the best players in Division I college tennis, with each conference receiving an automatic qualification and the remaining players selected at-large based on their performance and ranking by the ITA. Matches are the best-of-three sets, with no-ad scoring and a seven-point tiebreaker at six-games-all used for all matches.
