The FBI and Tohono O’odham Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a Tohono O’odham citizen by U.S. Border Patrol agents on May 22, 2023. The citizen, identified as Raymond Mattia, had called to report people trespassing on his property and was reportedly shot at his home on the reservation near the U.S.-Mexico border in southern Arizona. The Ajo Station agents were involved in the shooting, according to a spokesperson for Customs and Border Protection. The CPB’s Office of Personal Responsibility is also investigating the shooting. The Tohono O’odham Nation Chairman Ned Norris, Jr. expressed his condolences to Mattia’s family and called for a full investigation into the incident. Since the incident took place on Indian lands in Arizona, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has jurisdiction to investigate officer-involved shootings, and other major crimes on Indian lands. Officials, including the U.S. Border Patrol, the FBI, and Tohono O’odham Nation, have stated that they will not be releasing any additional information pending an active investigation.
