Health Career and College Fair Draws Dozens of Students to Bay College
On Tuesday, dozens of students attended the health career and college fair held at the Besse Galleries of Bay College in Escanaba, Michigan.
The fair featured 32 healthcare organizations from across the Upper Peninsula and Wisconsin, offering graduating students an opportunity to explore potential job prospects.
Speaking about the event, Coordinator Jennifer Farnsworth said, “Getting out and seeing what is available is really important as the whole process of seeking out a job takes a little bit of time as well as the hiring process.”
Big Opportunities for Graduating Students
Farnsworth highlighted two big opportunities for students at the event. “We have some areas that provide nurse externships for new graduate nurses and also Baycliff that has wonderful opportunities to work with pediatric populations,” she said.
Addressing the Healthcare Career Shortage
Farnsworth emphasized the importance of promoting health careers as there is a significant shortage in the field. “Getting the word out for what is needed at these facilities is really important,” she added. “There is a fairly high rate of retirement of healthcare career workers right now and post covid there were a lot of workers that those different career routes.”
Excitement Among Students
Many students were excited to explore the different opportunities available to them. Erin Johnson, a student in attendance, said, “I think it’s really important that we keep doing things like this so that people know there are a ton of jobs and demand for healthcare so it’s really great that this was being put on today.”
Johnson also said that the event gave her a good idea of potential career paths to explore. “I know that I really enjoy the OB clinic and I like the variety of a family practice, seeing all sorts of patients. And there was a lot of variety here to look into,” she said.
Future Health Career Fairs
Looking ahead, Farnsworth said that Bay College is interested in holding health career fairs twice a year at both the Escanaba and Iron Mountain campuses.
