Two reports released this week present conflicting views on the potential economic impact of the Tempe entertainment district. The reports were conducted by the Grand Canyon Institute and ASU’s W.P. Carey School of Business L. William Seidman Research Institute. The entertainment district, if approved, would include around 2,000 apartments and a new hockey arena for the Arizona Coyotes. The Seidman report, paid for by the Coyotes’ development team, argues that the district will generate billions of dollars for Tempe, and that revenue projections from previous studies had been underestimated. The Grand Canyon Institute report takes a far more skeptical view, arguing that the district will be a net drain on the city’s finances.
