Deadly Incident
At around 9:50 a.m., a gun was fired at East High School, injuring two school administrators. Austin Lyle was identified as the suspect, who had agreed to be patted down every morning under a “safety plan.” During a search, a handgun was found, and several shots were fired. The weapon was not recovered at the scene. One of the administrators remained hospitalized in serious condition, while the other had been discharged in good condition.
Safety Plans
Safety plans are implemented throughout school districts to address behavioral issues in coordination with students’ guardians. These plans are tailored to individualized needs and put in place for minor issues to more severe concerns.
Student-led Campaign for Gun Safety Reform
East High School recently lost a student after he was shot and killed while sitting in a car near the campus. His death sparked a student-led campaign for gun safety reform. The student-led campaign included a walkout and a visit to the state Capitol to demand legislative action.
Governor’s Response
Colorado’s Governor Jared Polis called the shooting tragic and wished for the injured to make a swift recovery. He acknowledged that the school shooting occurred exactly two years after ten people were killed in Boulder when a gunman opened fire at a King Soopers grocery store.
