New York City’s Summer Streets Program Expands to All Five Boroughs
The New York City Department of Transportation has announced that its annual Summer Streets program will be expanded to include all five boroughs for the first time in its 15-year history. This initiative opens up select streets throughout the city to provide New Yorkers with the opportunity to enjoy outdoor activities without the presence of vehicles. Along with free performances and various activities, the program aims to create vibrant and accessible public spaces.
Brooklyn to Host Summer Streets on August 26
This year, Brooklyn will host the Summer Streets program on Saturday, August 26. The event will take place along Eastern Parkway, from Grand Army Plaza to Buffalo Avenue, which is the same route as the Caribbean Day Parade. As stated by the NYC DOT, this year’s Summer Streets will be the largest in the program’s history.
Manhattan and Other Boroughs Joining the Program
The program will expand to Manhattan for the first time ever, with three consecutive Saturdays of Summer Streets on August 5th, 12th, and 19th. The Bronx and Brooklyn will both host the program on August 26, while Queens and Staten Island will join in on July 29. This expansion allows the Summer Streets experience to become a citywide celebration.
Aiming for a Vibrant and Accessible City
The Summer Streets program is part of Mayor Eric Adams’ “Working People’s Agenda,” which is a significant investment of $375 million to create vibrant and accessible public spaces throughout New York City. The specific programming for each borough’s Summer Streets event will be regularly updated on the NYC DOT website.
