Choice Hotels’ survey reveals summer travel preferences.

Choice Hotels International, Inc. has released the results of its Choice Privileges State of the American Traveler Survey, which provides insights into Americans’ travel plans and priorities. The survey, conducted with the help of Harris Poll, comes at a time when Choice Hotels has added nine new brands and approximately 600 hotels, including Radisson Blu, Radisson, and Country Inn & Suites, to its booking platform. Additionally, Choice Hotels recently integrated the Radisson Rewards Americas loyalty program into its Choice Privileges program, allowing over 60 million members to earn and redeem points at over 7,400 hotels across 22 brands in 45 countries and territories.

Noha Abdalla, Chief Marketing Officer of Choice Hotels International, stated that the survey details how people are planning to travel this summer and beyond. She mentioned that ChoiceHotels.com offers an easy way for consumers to find the right hotel with the desired amenities at the guaranteed lowest price, now with more options and locations than ever before.

Key findings from the survey include:

1. Majority of Americans want to spend less than $200 per night on lodging: 78% of respondents typically aim to spend under $200 per night on lodging.
2. Most Americans prioritize experiences over lodging costs: 73% of respondents prefer to splurge on experiences and limit their expenses on lodging.
3. Specific experiences drive trip planning: 26% of Americans plan their trips around sports, music, and theater events that are post-pandemic resumptions.
4. Some prefer to spend more on upscale lodging: 27% of respondents are willing to splurge on lodging, with 21% prepared to spend $200 or more per night.
5. Loyalty programs help save money: 41% of Americans plan to save money by using hotel/loyalty program points this summer, and 30% book using a loyalty member rate. Almost a third (29%) of Americans would pay for their road trips using loyalty points.
6. Road trips remain popular in the U.S.: 38% of respondents travel to feel more connected to and to explore their own country. Over half (65%) consider three or more destinations ideal for a road trip. The majority (67%) want to visit tourist attractions, while many (57%) prefer to stay in a city or near a popular U.S. landmark. More than half (57%) of Americans listen to personalized playlists or local radio while on the road.
7. Preferred road trip co-pilot: 64% of Americans are road tripping to make memories with family and friends. Over half (60%) want to travel with their spouse/partner/significant other, 16% prioritize traveling with their pets, 9% prefer to be alone, 4% would choose a co-worker, and 2% would select a stranger as their co-pilot.
8. Prioritizing self-care while traveling: 45% of respondents prefer to stay at a property with a pool, 35% would like to enjoy a hotel spa, and 23% consider visiting the hotel gym a must.
9. Work and leisure mix during business trips: 76% of respondents said they would extend business trips to include leisure time. The majority (86%) would stay at the same hotel as during their work trip. Over half (58%) mentioned sharing a hotel room with colleagues on work trips.
