The International Player Pathway Program: Unearthing Hidden Talents
The International Player Pathway has once again showcased its ability to discover promising athletes in the world of football. This time, the program has uncovered another talent who has caught the attention of the Los Angeles Chargers.
Chargers Triumph Over Rams in Preseason Game
In an exhilarating preseason game held at SoFi Stadium, the Los Angeles Chargers emerged victorious over their city rivals, the Los Angeles Rams. The game was filled with remarkable moments, with Derius Davis’ impressive 82-yard punt return standing out among the best plays.
However, it was another play that garnered widespread celebration on the Chargers’ touchline. 21-year-old CJ Okoye, making his NFL debut, triumphantly sacked Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett.
From Africa to the NFL
CJ Okoye, born in Nkwere, Nigeria, caught the attention of the Chargers through the International Player Pathway. After attending NFL Africa Camp in 2022, Okoye’s talents were recognized, leading to his signing with the team.
The discovery of Okoye at the camp was credited to former NFL defensive end Osi Umenyiora, who shares Nigerian roots and was born in London. Umenyiora’s keen eye for talent has once again paid off.
Becoming an NFL Regular
With his debut under his belt, Okoye aspires to establish himself as a regular starter in the NFL. He follows in the footsteps of other success stories from the International Player Pathway program, including Efe Obada, Jakob Johnson, and Jordan Mailata.
