Xavier López, a Mexican children’s comic artist known by his stage name “Chabelo,” has passed away at the age of 88, announced President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Saturday. López is best known for his long-running Sunday variety show “En Familia con Chabelo,” which aired for 48 years from 1967 to 2015 and remains the longest-running television show in Mexican history. Despite being no relation to the president, López’s work left a lasting impression on Mexican popular culture, as he pioneered a genre of adult comics dressed as children that remained popular on TV for decades. López himself became known for his child-like raspy voice and his tendency to perform in children’s clothing well into his 80s. López died suddenly of abdominal complications, according to his family. He is survived by his wife and several children.
